“Hey, are you okay?” Jasper stopped once they exited the bar and turned to his mate, cupping Kole’s cheek. The night had been great until Max appeared.

The minute the man sat across from them, all of the old feelings Kole had worked hard to tuck away came roaring to life, frustrating the shit out of him. He should be over Max. He had his mate; he should be happy and moving forward. Leaving the past in the past. Yet one whiff of his scent, and Kole had gone hard. His wolf pushed forward, and all he could think about was rubbing against the man who had left him so many years ago.

“No, I’m not okay,” he answered. “My whole world right now feels like one giant ball of confusion.” No matter what, he had to be honest with Jasper. He couldn’t allow the man to feel as though he weren’t enough. For Kole, he would always be enough. “I never expected him to show up, you have to understand.”

“I understand, Kole. Give me a little credit here.”

“But, you’re taking this like it doesn’t matter.” Kole gave an exasperated sigh. “You should be pissed and angry with me.”

“Trust me, I am confused right now. I feel as though both of us have been blindsided. But, I know there is something there between the two of you. You can deny it; however, I know the truth. You want him, too.”

“You’re my mate,” he stated, trying to make Jasper understand. Instead, the man caressed his cheek with his thumb and gave him a sad smile.

“As you are mine,” he answered. “In the time I have been here, I have learned all kinds of things about you and your pack, but don’t you think you owe it to yourself to find out what this is?”

“But….”

“I am not going anywhere, Kole. I promise you I’m not. I know I told you when you mated me, I needed time to process everything, and you have been so patient with me. I am not going anywhere.” He wrapped his palm around Kole’s nape and pulled him in close. “Can you break a mating?”

Kole shook his head, unsure of where Jasper’s headed. “No. Once you’ve been marked, you’re mine forever.”

“So, I can’t leave without missing you or needing you, and the same goes for you?” Kole nodded, growing more leery by the second. “Don’t look so scared.”

“So, where do we go from here, Jasper?” He hated sounding so small. He hated being unsure of himself, but with Max returning, his life had been turned upside down. Nothing made sense, everything seemed to be out of control, and his own emotions warred within him.

“Home, so I can make love to my mate.” Jasper laced his fingers with Kole’s and finished walking to the truck. “You need to remember no one is ever going to take me away, Kole. I’m yours. Tonight, I’ll prove it.”

The drive home had been silent. Kole glanced over at his mate several times, trying to gauge what the man could be thinking.
